Do we need travel insurance?

Skinny Waters has booked your fly fishing trip to Christmas Island and you have everything you need stacked in neat little piles. Hold on though, if you haven’t purchased travel and emergency evacuation insurance, you’re missing a crucial piece of the puzzle!

Things happen when you travel. Usually those things are fun, exciting, unique, happy and memorable. But sometimes things can go wrong. Health issues, accidents, natural disasters, lost luggage and numerous other events can ruin your vacation and create significant unforeseen expenses. Having travel insurance can help resolve most of those unfortunate situations and cover financial costs that you may not have budgeted for on your own.

You’ve spent a lot of time and money planning your upcoming trip. You should protect your vacation, just like you would protect your house, car and any other significant investment. You’re not just buying insurance that will cover the things that might go wrong. You’re also buying peace of mind so that you won’t have to worry about those things that could go wrong and can simply focus on all of the things that will make this a trip of a lifetime!

When you travel, especially internationally, you should consider what will happen if you have a health event or serious accident. It is not uncommon for a medical evacuation to cost $50,000 to $100,000 or more from some countries. Those costs can easily climb upwards of $500,000 or more in remote locations around the world where flights have to be chartered to get you to a hospital, or back to the U.S. for medical care. These expenses, without the protection of travel insurance, have bankrupted some travelers who didn’t plan ahead for the possibility of needing this service.

Using Christmas Island as an example; with flights to and from the island only on Wednesdays, any serious injury or accident might necessitate a chartered flight.
