Mahahual, Mexico
An easy drive from Cancun, Mahahual offers guided and DIY options for permit, bonefish, tarpon and snook. The town has a small, laid-back feel, but enough going on that the non-fisherman in your group will have a lot to do. The whole length of the coast, both north and south, offers great beach fishing. These beaches get very little pressure! Lagoons to the north are loaded with tarpon and snook. Chetumal Bay and Xcalak are less than an hour away and make a great day trip. We have lodging and guiding options in both Mahahual and Xcalak. You’ll get many permit shots each day and these areas in Mexico are still extremely affordable.
Fly Fishing
The permit and bonefishing here is mostly from the beach, although there is a large flat area just out from town that fishes really well for both species. This flat is easily reached from the beach. The beaches offer mile after mile of great permit habitat. The water is crystal clear and fish are easily spotted. Even the most inexperienced DIY anglers will get good shots. Rent a paddle board and you’ll have access to the lagoons holding tarpon and snook. These are adjacent to the ocean and connected by cenotes. These lagoons average about 3′ deep and are easily accessed. Want to steepen the learning curve, our guides can help you fish the beaches and/or the lagoons.

Accommodations
We have lodging options in town and on the beach. Lodging and meals here are extremely affordable! The lodging is clean, but simple with all the necessities and AC. You will have some of the best meals you have ever experienced at the local restaurants. Stay on the beach and you can fish right out your front door! If you want things a little more quiet and laid-back, stay with us in town. Mahahual is a safe place with a multitude of great fishing and a ton of non-fishing activities for your family.
You’ll have to rent your vehicle in Cancun. There are many options there and here are a couple things to be aware of… The specific car you reserve online will most likely not be what’s available when you arrive. In Mexico you are required to purchase collision/liability insurance. This will increase the cost of the rental car by at least 30%. This won’t be included on your total when booking a car online.
