When will Kiritimati (Christmas Island) Open?
The question everyone wants an answer to, when will Christmas Island open up its borders to fly fishermen? The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration for the country of Kiribati just posted that the current shut down will continue until at least the end of June 2021. At that time they will re-evaluate.
So, what do we do in the mean time? Many other locations are open and accepting fishermen, although right now, there are quite a few hoops to jump through to get there and back. Mexico may be one of the easiest. If traveling from the US, you will need a clear Covid test to get home, but no testing requirements to get into the country. The Bahamas is accepting visitors with a clear test that is no more that 5 days old. Once on the island, you will need to be tested within 5 days. Another test is needed to re-enter the US. Add them up and you need 3 Covid tests to make that trip. Still worth it if you need your DIY fly fishing fix. Other countries, one such is Cuba, are allowing visitors with a quarantine requirement once you arrive. Many of us don’t have unlimited time and this just isn’t an option.
