San Salvador is a Bahamian outer-island which offers a great opportunity to hunt some of the least spooky bonefish anywhere. A quick flight from Nassau brings you to this essentially untouched fishery. There are no fly fishing guides here and therefore, very little pressure on the flats and this shows in the fishing.

Fly Fishing

Five-mile long Pigeon Creek offers the best chances for bonefish, permit (yep, big permit here), jacks and barracuda. The bottom is mostly firm making a majority of the creek fishable. Paddleboard fishing here pays off big time.

It’s worth noting, the bonefish here are different from just about any other fishery. These fish are the least spooky, best eating fish you will ever encounter. Refusals are rare and fly choice is easy as about anything will be greedily attacked. Hit the fish on the head, lined him, blew the cast? Not to worry as these bones are more curious than skittish. The average fish here is 3-5lbs and double-digit fish are around.

The ocean flats hold a variety of bonefish, triggerfish and other reef species, but with a few exceptions, are slightly deep for wading. Spending some time exploring these at low tide can pay off.

About San Salvador

Cockburn Town (pronounced Ko-burn) is the capital of San Salvador, one of the smaller islands in the Bahamas with just over 1000 inhabitants. It’s best known for it’s snorkeling, diving and a Club Med. One of the smaller islands in the chain, San Salvador has a road circling the perimeter offering easy access to the entire coast. Much of the interior is covered in lakes.

There is one main grocery store that is relatively well stocked and a couple local restaurants that serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, sometimes. Dining at the Club Med is also an option. There are many accessible beaches around the island and you’ll have most of these to yourself.

Getting to the island is easy as there are daily flights from Nassau. Most of the roads on the island are in good shape. We can help you book a rental car.

Other Things To Do

San Salvador doesn’t get a lot of visitors making it a great escape from the crowds. Don’t expect shopping or great restaurants. Aside from a Club Med there are only a couple dining options. These serve local fare and are simple but good.

San Salvador is home to some great snorkeling as well as reef and cave diving. Most of the best areas are on the lee of the island making for excellent conditions and visibility.

Deep sea fishing for wahoo, blue marlin, tuna and dolphin is exceptional.

You can visit several plantation ruins, a museum, numerous monuments as well as a lighthouse.

The road surrounding the entire island gives you a great access to the many beaches. More often than not, you’ll have them to yourself.
