Novel Coronavirus and Christmas Island
The country of Kiribati has imposed temporary travel restrictions in an attempt to keep the Novel Coronavirus at bay.
About February 18th, Fiji Airways sent notices to travelers alerting them to these new restrictions. Basically, anyone attempting to visit any of the islands in Kiribati must have spent the last 14 days in a country free of the virus. The last I heard, Fiji Airlines were offering travel credit that must be used anywhere from 6-12 months for those who’s plans are affected.
Right now, travelers from Canada, Fiji and some European countries are still unrestricted and allowed entry. No one knows how long this will last. It will be a difficult time for the people of Christmas and the other islands. Skinny Waters has had a handful of fly fishermen who are trying to change/fix their travel plans. Those who purchased travel insurance will be covered (if they picked the correct coverage) those who didn’t, are left scrambling.
How long will this last? What does it mean for those hoping to plan a guided or DIY trip to Christmas Island? Until things change, the best plan is to gear up, tie flies and hope this situations doesn’t last long. Please reach out if you have any questions!
