Christmas Island and Covid Update
The vast DIY fly fishing options that Christmas Island offers are still currently unavailable to visitors.
The bonefish, giant trevally and triggerfish that have now forgotten the difference between a fly and a live shrimp won’t be reminded anytime soon. The island is still on lock-down with no firm re-open date available at this time. A couple of local island friends have told me that visitors will be welcomed back January 20. 2021. I have not been able to confirm this with any other source. We are hopeful, but skeptical at this point. Kiribati was one of the first countries to shut its borders back in February. Given the amount of new cases that continue to rise, I don’t see how they are going to open up unless things change dramatically and soon.
What to do in the meantime? We are just getting back from an exploratory trip to Mahahual, Mexico, chasing the GT’s less fun, more finicky younger brother, the permit. (yes, I know they are not really related, but they are both silver) Mahahual is a smallish Mexican coastal town well away from the hustle and bustle of Cancun. Lots of DIY options for permit, bones, tarpon and snook. Great guided options as well.
If you are looking for your saltwater fix, Mexico is still open and welcoming visitors! Want to fish in Punta Allen (Ascension Bay) or Mahahual, please reach out to us!
